The Austin Foundation Expands ‘Becoming Young Adults’ Initiative Through SMASH Financial Literacy Partnership

In July 2025, The Austin Foundation expanded its Becoming Young Adults (BYA) initiative through a powerful partnership with SMASH, delivering a four-part Financial Literacy Series to over 20 rising high school sophomores and juniors. Designed to equip students with real-world financial skills and confidence, this program addressed a critical gap in traditional education, one that too often leaves youth unprepared to manage money, credit, and future financial decisions.

Each workshop was intentionally designed to reflect the mission of BYA: preparing students for life after high school — personally, professionally, and financially. Through hands-on learning, culturally responsive instruction, and peer collaboration, students explored the foundational principles of budgeting, banking, credit, and income planning.

“This series made me realize how unprepared I was before but now I feel ready to handle real-life money stuff,” one student shared.

The Financial Literacy Series included four focused sessions:

  • Budgeting 101 – Managing expenses, setting goals, and identifying needs vs. wants

  • Credit & Debt – Understanding credit scores, borrowing, interest, and responsible repayment

  • Checking & Savings – Learning the functions of financial accounts and avoiding common banking pitfalls

  • Budgeting Your Salary – Breaking down paychecks, taxes, and long-term savings strategies

In addition to expert facilitation by The Austin Foundation team, we were honored to welcome the PNC team from Ann Arbor into the classroom. Their active participation and insight helped reinforce key banking concepts and gave students direct exposure to financial professionals committed to supporting youth empowerment.

Students also received access to Level All, a digital platform that extends financial learning and supports future planning beyond the classroom.

“I didn’t even know what net income was before this. Now I understand my paychecks and credit,” said another student.

“Now I want to open a 401(k) when I get my first job.”

“I finally feel like I understand how money works and how to make it work for me.”

According to final survey data:

  • 94% of students reported increased confidence in their ability to make financial decisions

  • 92% would recommend the program to a peer

  • 90% felt more prepared for adulthood after completing the series

This partnership exemplifies the Becoming Young Adults model, a holistic, responsive approach to youth development that integrates life skills, emotional intelligence, and long-term wellness. It is proof that when young people are given access to the right tools, knowledge, and community support, they rise.

With these results, The Austin Foundation is prepared to scale this model across new schools and cities, delivering life-changing education to even more youth through Next Level Labs, our expansion platform designed to deepen impact and broaden reach.
